The author introduces the Hungarian didactic test which was used for testing current algorithmic and application computer skills of freshmen of tertiary IT studies. The appropriateness of using this test in Czech Republic in order to find out the current status quo is considered. The author discusses this informatics test, analyses some particular tasks, and reveals the results of the first experimental testing among some IT students of West Bohemia University and South Bohemia University. A group of primary and secondary school teachers took part in the project, too, so students' results are compared not only between these two universities groups, but within groups with respect to students' self-assessments and teachers' prognosis.
